A Call to Comfort
Beckons organic clothing struts on the eco fashion runway
10/8/2009 - Jessica Burch
Admittedly, I’m a girl whose wardrobe could generously be called “pajama chic.” First, I look for comfort, then fashion, then comfort again. Oh, and did I say comfort? So I was more than happy to test drive Beckons’ Strength Organic Cotton Tee and Grace Fold Over Skirt/Strapless Dress.

“In Fashion, One Day You’re In…”- The tee has a medium scoop neck, cap sleeves and a snug fit. I tried the white, but it also comes in a variety of colors. The medium fit fairly true to size.
- The skirt / dress can be worn as a short dress or, with the top rolled down, as a calf-length skirt. There are two layers of fabric (so the top is double-faced) with a contrast color underneath.
- These clothes are COMFY! The cotton was soft but stiff enough to retain its shape. The tee was light weight but not thin enough to be sheer. Both the tee and skirt/dress (can I call it a skress?) kept their shape throughout the day and after a few washings.
- Finally, let’s say I spilled some tea on the shirt purely for the benefit of product testing. The tea stain (of course it had to be a red color, you know – for the benefit of you, the reader) came out in the wash! This is definitely beyond what I expected!
- Beckons specializes in organic yoga/lifestyle clothing. The clothes are intended to be easy-fitting but flattering so they’re great for those of you who can’t help but check yourself out in the studio mirror, but also for just running around.
- Beckons uses only organic cotton and sustainable fibers sourced from Texas, India, Turkey and China. The growing fields and processing are certified by a number of organizations in order to ensure fabrics meet USDA and Organic Trade Association guidelines. Although some of the fabric is sourced overseas, Beckons uses US manufacturing facilities in San Diego in order to support US employment and ensure their laborers are treated fairly.
“…and the Next Day You’re Out”- The skirt/dress may be better as a cover-up than a true outfit. Although comfortably fitting, the fairly straight up-and-down cut of the dress wasn’t the most flattering. The fold-down top gave the impression of a bit of a tummy bulge. And I thought it was a bit casual even for my pajama chic stylings.
- At $41 (tee) and $69 (skirt/dress), both items were on the pricey side.
The Bottom Line
Every girl knows clothes are personal. So, personally I love the Beckons tee! The snug fit and mid-weight fabric suited me just right, while the organic cotton suits the environment. I think ultimately the decision comes down to value. I think a great white tee is a necessary fashion staple and Beckons tee is worth the splurge.
On the other hand, the less flattering skirt/dress doesn’t seem worth the price to me. I just won’t wear it enough to justify the price. But, if a convertible skirt/dress is more your style you can always pretend it’s buy one, get one free! Both items are available for purchase on the Beckons website.
