Organic kids clothing gives parents something to talk about
10/29/2009 - Ecoscene Staff
We constantly have our kids' safety and wellbeing in mind, but often times you may not realize that the clothing they are wearing is just as important as what they are eating. Conventionally grown cotton is notoriously for the amount of pesticides used to grow it in mass amounts. Switching to organic cotton clothing for your babies and children should be another step to think about to keep them and the planet safe. There are organic children's clothing companies cropping up on a regular basis, and Ecoscene decided to take a closer look at Happy Green Bee. Our tester tried out the A-Line Sundress in the Watermelon / Sky color combination.

Talk of the Town (+)- The clothing is made from organically grown cotton. This means Happy Green Bee clothing does not contribute to the pesticide pollution of our air and soil.
- The dress has a nice easy fit with bright happy colors that have not faded after multiple washes.
- All the clothing shares a similar bee-striped pattern and is designed to be as gender neutral as possible.
- The company sells everything from tights to swimsuits for babies through young children.
- Happy Green Bee reuses shipping materials whenever possible. They also make use of recyclable cardboard boxes and envelopes.
Gossip Mill (-)- Color schemes are somewhat limited.
- There has been some slight pilling of the fibers after multiple washes.
- After one washing the tie on the shoulder of the dress fell off. It took one stitch to fix but I would have rather not had to repair it.
- The website states that they use sustainable manufacturing practices, but it does not elaborate on what makes their practices earth friendly or where the clothing is actually made. Upon further investigation, Ecoscene learned the products are made in India at a family owned factory that is certified for organics and social compliance. They have also applied for fair trade certification.
The Bottom Line
The Happy Green Bee dress is cute and playful, and the clothing line is designed to allow kids the freedom to move and play without restriction. If Happy Green Bee can look into making their products more durable, they will not only be a hit on the playground and planet earth, but also with moms and dads everywhere. The dress featured in this article is available for $32 on the Happy Green Bee website.
