Gear Check
Carrying your load responsibly with Ecogear
11/24/2009 - Deborah Gutfeld
Most days, I feel like I carry the weight of the world on my shoulders. To be slightly less dramatic, my daily load consists of fresh workout gear, a pair of running shoes, a water bottle, toiletries, a hair dryer and at least one work file. All of this stuff can really add up and I was shocked to find out that my gym bag can add as much as 15 pounds to my daily commute. Because of my heavy load, I need to carry a backpack that allows the weight of the bag to be evenly distributed because the wrong backpack can make for some heavy health problems. My backpack needs to be more than a fashion statement; I need one that is just the right size (not too big or too small), well-constructed and, of course, eco friendly. In my quest for the perfect green backpack, I tested the Mohave Tui by Ecogear.

Lightened My Load (+)- Made with planet friendly PVC-free materials and toxic free dyes and components.
- Constructed with multiple compartments (of various sizes), which help distribute weight more evenly.
- Shoulder straps are comfortably padded and well-spaced.
- Has a separate key compartment that allows for quick access at the end of a long day.
- Perfect as a carry-on bag for air travel.
- Available in three different color combinations.
A Ton of Bricks (-)- The bag does not offer a waist belt, which can offer more support for a heavy load. While it does have a chest strap that I imagine is for the same purpose, it doesn’t have the same effect.
- Though roomy, the backpack was not quite big enough to meet my day-to-day carrying needs.
- All Ecogear bags are manufactured in China, increasing the products' carbon footprints.
- While the Mohave Tui is not made from post consumer materials, the company is launching the Recycle Series featuring bags made from recycled PVC bottles in early 2010.
The Bottom Line
I would highly recommend the Mohave Tui for those with a slightly lighter load than mine. It was exceedingly comfortable, compact and creates virtually no risk to the environment. It is available for $69.99 on the Ecogear website. (Currently on sale for $39.99)
