Personal hand towels cut down on waste
2/1/2010 - Shayne Bell
To make one ton of paper towels, 17 trees and 20,000 gallons of water are polluted. PeopleTowels, a California-based company, is seeking to solve this eco problem by bringing to America what the Japanese have been doing for years - small hand towels that you carry around instead of using paper towels. Will this help cut down the 741 pounds of paper towel waste that an average person uses each year? Let's see:

Dry as a Bone- Great to dry your hands with after using the washroom. I think this would work very well in offices where they could just hang these towels in the bathrooms instead of using paper products.
- According to their website, by using PeopleTowels for one year, you save ¼ tree, reduce landfill waste by 23 lbs and conserve 250 gallons of water.
- PeopleTowels are made of 100% organic, fair trade cotton and are printed with eco friendly dyes.
- There is a variety of fun, cute designs to choose from.
- They are small enough (approximately 9"x9") to carry in a small purse or even in your pocket and have a loop to hang or clip it to things.
- PeopleTowels are certified organic by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), which covers the use and processing of organic fibers, as well as the social, environmental, and quality criteria, which includes fair trade.
- The organic cotton is sourced from the Chetna Project, an Indian organization that promotes the fair trade organic cotton supply chain.
- Organizations and businesses can order their own personalized towels to use for staff, gifts or office supplies.
- They are a 1% for the Planet company, meaning they donate 1% of their sales to environmental organizations. They also donate to the Breast Cancer Fund.
Sopping Wet- The biggest difficulty for me is remembering that I have the towel when I'm in the washroom. It takes a lot of “Doh!” moments before you start to remember that you have your own towel.
- That being said, you also have to remember to wash it every few days, before it gets mildewy in your bag.
- They're a little pricey- 3 towels will put you back $21, plus shipping.
- PeopleTowels are currently only available on their website.
- The towels are manufactured in India, increasing the product's carbon footprint.
The Bottom Line
While the towels are a little pricey and it takes some time to get into the habit of using them, I think these cute towels are well worth the price and time it takes to get used to them. As long as they start to make them available at local retailers, I think this could become a new popular eco trend. I hope to start seeing them hanging around offices and other restrooms around the country!
