Clean Sweep
Are Jamar Labs biodegradable wipes the real deal?
-

As with most people with young children, wipes are a part of my family's daily lives. Granted most are for our daughter's tush, but we as parents do find wipes convenient for cleaning our hands on the go. So when we had the chance to test out the eco friendly “WipeYour Hands," "Wipe Your Feet," and "Wipe Your Face" products from Jamar Labs we were very excited.

Wipe Away! (+)

  • The wipes smell good when opening the package and leave a nice but not too powerful scent after use.
  • The wipes are all paraben and phthalate free.
  • After repeated openings and closings, the resealable package retained the wipes' moisture.
  • They worked well for wiping away dirt in a topical manner.
  • The biodegradable wipes are also flushable and the package is recyclable.

Stop the Wiping! (-)

  • The packaging states “Keep Out Of Reach of Children,” which is odd considering the company's mission is to make products that are "safe for the whole family." If they are truly eco friendly, then shouldn't my daughter be allowed to touch it? We passed it off for liability purposes (i.e. swallowing wipes isn't the best idea) and went ahead with the testing.
  • While there are different ingredients in each product, each package says they can be used on your hands, face, arms, and legs, so we're not so sure what the real differences are between the versions except for various oils and fragrances in the ingredient list.
  • They are a bit flimsy. They made it through a hand wiping, but not without some damage.
  • Natural cotton does not mean organic cotton, and most cotton growers use a lot of pesticides on their crops.
  • Although the product description says that the wipes moisturize your hands and feet, we found little lasting moisturizing effect after use.
  • The wipes are packed very tightly with a fairly small opening, making it difficult to get just one out at a time.
  • The wipes are made in Israel, increasing the product's carbon footprint for those living outside that region.
  • They are very expensive compared with other eco friendly wipes on the market such as Seventh Generation and Elements Naturals. While the latter two are specifically made for babies their ingredient list is very similar except for the fragrances. Jamar Labs' wipes come out to about $0.26 per wipe while Seventh Generation wipes are about $0.09 per wipe and $0.07 per wipe for Elements Naturals.

The Bottom Line

All in all, these wipes didn't exactly s-wipe us off our feet. Their flimsy nature and expensive cost would prevent us from using the product again. Except for the scent, we didn't notice very much of a difference from other environmentally friendly wipes out on the market. The wipes are available for $7.95 (30 count package) on the Jamar Labs website.
