Responsible Drinking
BPA free sippy cups keep the peace
-

My 15 month-old son, Hunter, already seems to prefer drinking out of a regular cup, trying to be just like his mom and dad. While this may seem like a milestone, it's rather messy and often causes major tantrums whenever we are eating out. So much so that my husband and I have resorted to hiding our drinking glasses in our laps or under the table in the hopes of avoiding said tantrums. Needless to say, I was thrilled to finally get him to drink out of his sippy cups. We tried both the Klean Kanteen and the Safe Sippy by Kid Basix.

All Grown Up (+)

  • Both sippy cups resist leaks, which is wonderful with a destructive toddler.
  • Since both are BPA-free and stainless steel, they are nicely insulated, which is great for keeping water cold when running errands.
  • They are easy to assemble and have few parts (after cleaning baby bottles for over a year, I like when there are only a couple of parts).
  • Both are sleek and slim, but still hold a great deal of fluid (11 oz. and 12 oz.), which is nice compared to the bulkier sippy cups available.
  • Oh, did I mention the dishwasher? I love being able to put things in the dishwasher.
  • Hunter likes the handles (that are removable) on the Safe Sippy, which makes it easier for him to hold. Alternatively, the Klean Kanteen has a similar shape to their water bottles.
  • I like the sleeve on the Safe Sippy. It keeps the cold bottle out of Hunter's hands and helps reduce the loud bang when Hunter drops it (or throws it, depending on his mood).
  • Hunter prefers the wide mouth piece on the Klean Kanteen versus the narrow tube on the Safe Sippy. I think the contoured shape reminds him of his pacifier.
  • The plastic used on the Safe Sippy is #5, which is recyclable and phthalate free. The Safe Sippy also comes in packaging that is made from post consumer materials and uses soy based inks.
  • Both are available in different colors.

Tantrum Thrower (-)

  • Both the Klean Kanteen and the Safe Sippy are made in China, increasing the products' carbon footprints.
  • The Klean Kanteen does get cold, especially in the winter months. You will want to put a sleeve on this sippy to keep your child's hands protected.

The Bottom Line

I would recommend either sippy cup and Hunter certainly likes both of them. If you are looking for a durable, leak-proof sippy cup, you can’t go wrong with either the Klean Kanteen or the Safe Sippy. Here’s to enjoying mess-free drinks (for your child, of course)! Klean Kanteen is available for $17.95 and the Safe Sippy is $17 on Amazon.
