Reality Star
Do the ecotronics eco friendly toys leave ecoscene singing?
-

Perhaps you've noticed musical talent in your young child or maybe you just want to help cultivate interest for the future. Ecoscene asked our three year-old friend Mason to try out the Ecotronics eco microphone to see if this new eco friendly toy holds a tune. We knew we were onto something good when upon receiving the eco mic his exact words were, "this is amazing."

You're Going to Hollywood (+)

  • Mason played with the eco mic every single day for a week. Many weeks later, he still picks it up to play about two times a week, standing in front of the mirror to play rock star.
  • The eco mic does not use batteries, keeping waste out of landfills. It has a small crank in the back that recharges the mic after turning it a few times, sound effect included.
  • It's easy for young children to turn the crank on their own, so Mason enjoyed cranking it round and round until his arm grew tired.
  • The toy is light weight and durable - it easily fits in small hands, has survived many drops on the floor, and the crank has not become loose after lots of turning.
  • There are four buttons on the mic and each provide a different sound effect: voice magnification, playing of Pop Goes the Weasel, and two different drumming effects.
  • The voice magnifying is very loud and entertaining.
  • The eco mic is packaged in a sturdy, recycled cardboard carton that is biodegradable. Mason actually liked playing with the carton as well, storing several of his cars in it.

Voted Off the Island (-)

  • It does have limited capabilities; for example it only plays one song.
  • The eco mic is made out of plastic and it is not clear where this plastic comes from or if the actual mic is recyclable.
  • While the company is based in the UK, it is not clear where the eco mic is manufactured.

The Bottom Line

Mason loved this toy and his mom would definitely buy it as a gift for other children (ages 2-5). While it's great that Ecotronics is making toys that are fun and don't require batteries, we would like to see them provide more information about the plastic used to make the product and where it is manufactured. It is available for $19.99 at IntPlay.
