Ecoscene resident pup reviews organic dog shampoo
11/12/2009 - Aimee Heilbrunn
At a furry 50 pounds, Gus is not the kind of dog you can just wash in the bathtub. The numerous attempts to escape the 'torture' and constant shaking off of water have left my bathroom a dirt-splattered mess. So, most of the time Gus goes to the groomer, but there is no doubt that I worry about the type of shampoo and treatments they use on him. A couple of times, he has come home with super red eyes and smelling way too flowery for the manly dog that he is. I decided to use the self wash at my local pet store while testing Bubble + Squeak Herbal Dog Shampoo by Olive.

Fun in the Tub (+)- The shampoo is FDA certified organic using elements like coconut and olive oils, calendula, hemp oil, peppermint, rosemary and lavender.
- No parabens, sodium lauryl/laureth sulfates, phthalates or fragrances and 100% biodegradable.
- The product smells fantastic and suds up really nicely. No red eyes afterward for Gus.
- Days later Gus' fur is still super soft.
- The #2 plastic bottle is recycleable, although it does not utilize post consumer materials.
- I also had the chance to test Olive's Comfy Pup Organic Dog Blanket ($18). The soft, certified organic cotton blanket is nice for your pup, but is not absorbent enough for directly after the bath - it would be better for wiping paws or a light towel dry post rain.
- Both products are made in the USA.
- Olive orders are packaged with earth friendly, non-toxic materials. Tissue paper and boxes are made from post consumer waste and loose-fill is cornstarch based biodegradable and compostable. All materials are resuseable and recyclable.
- The cosmetic fill bottle (product all the way up the neck of the bottle) gives you 16oz of product despite the 12oz size bottle.
All Washed Up (-)- I found it hard to gauge how much product to use as the only directions are "a little goes along way." It might be helpful for Olive to include a recommended amount of product per approximate dog size. I wasn't sure how much (or if) it would lather and didn't want to be wasteful. I used up about 1/8 of the bottle on one wash.
- The great fresh smell does not last post wash, although Gus did smell clean.
The Bottom Line
Gus and I both liked the Bubble + Squeak natural dog shampoo and the organic cotton blanket. The two items together would make a nice holiday gift for a dog or dog lover. While the cost seems high up front ($15.50 for 160z) it averages out (for a 50lb dog) to about $0.96 per use, which is pretty affordable considering the benefits to Gus and the planet.
