Treats For All
Ecoscene takes a closer look at Blue Dog Bakery treats
-

When my dogs, Boris the Bichon/Poodle mix and Natasha the Silky Terrier, hear a bag rattle or a box open, they always assume it’s for them and they always assume it’s a treat. Needless to say they were more than willing to test the Blue Dog Bakery Treats.

Begging for More (+)

  • Boris and Natasha tried two flavors: the small snacks Peanut Butter and Molasses and the Meaty Flavors dog treats.
  • The first thing I noticed when looking at the ingredients is that there was nothing I wouldn’t eat myself.
  • The treats are made with 100% natural ingredients with no animal by-products, no preservatives, and no artificial flavors or colors. I could identify everything without a dictionary or a chemistry book.
  • While they love treats, they can be picky. But the dogs seem to really enjoy these flavors (especially the peanut butter).
  • The boxes are recyclable and made from post consumer recycled materials.
  • Made in the USA.
  • While some of the ingredients are sourced from outside the USA, they are sustainably harvested.

Lost Appetite (-)

  • The treats are enormous, even the small snacks. My dogs combined only weigh 25 lbs so one of the Meaty flavor treats was almost equivalent to a whole meal for them.
  • They are not easy to break up into smaller more manageable pieces for my dogs to enjoy. The company does make a smaller size treat, Doggie Paws, but I did not test this size.
  • They didn't travel well. A quick walk to the park and I had mostly crumbs in my pocket when I got there.
  • The treats are also packaged in a plastic bag inside the box.

The Bottom Line

While the flavor was great and the dogs enjoyed them, they are probably best for bigger dogs as an every day treat. For my little pups, they were really only good for an extra special treat or as a small meal when we were out and about. Treats are available for $16 - $27 on the Blue Dog Bakery website and in many retail outlets.
