Ecoscene takes a closer look at Chubes
1/21/2010 - Ecoscene Staff
Sarah the hamster is back again. This time she's reporting on Chubes, the eco friendly play tube for small animals. Since she and her owner were thrilled with the eco friendly litter that transformed her cage last summer, Sarah was up to the task of testing a safe toy that could make her cage even more fun. She reported back on her findings and here is what she had to say:

Perfect Hiding Spot (+)- Chubes are made from vegetable parchment paper so they are safe for your furry friend to chew on and for the environment.
- Chubes come with raw cotton fluff bedding and Sarah LOVED it! She moved it all around her cage for nesting.
- They are available in different sizes and colors to accomodate any size small animal.
- Made in the USA.
You're It (-)- Sarah chewed on the tube a little, climbed in a few times, but for the most part ignored it.
- If your pet decides to use the chube as a toilet, it will need to be replaced more frequently.
- The fluff bedding can get a little messy and dirty.
- It is not clear if the dyes used to create the different color tubes are eco friendly.
- The chubes do come wrapped in plastic creating excess waste.
- It is not clear if chubes can be recycled or composted at the end of the products' lifecycles.
The Bottom Line
Sarah wasn't blown away by Chubes, but did enjoy the raw cotton bedding. The tube is nice, but may be more exciting for more active animals. If your small animal isn't a big chewer, you can always throw an empty toilet paper roll or paper towel roll for them to play with instead of purchasing a new product. Chubes are available for $7 on Amazon.
